Scoliosis FusionAn Scoliosis Fusion is a procedure in which the spine is permanently corrected for abnormal curvature. This procedure is indicated when conservative non-operative treatment measures have failed for scoliosis. This is often performed with hook and pedicle screw instrumentation, occasionally it may be performed through the chest or abdomen. Once asleep and positioned in the operating room, the nurse will cleanse your back with antiseptic solution. This procedure is performed with intraoperative neurologic monitoring. The surgeon will make a large incision on the back and dissect the tissues in order to access the spine. The spinal surgeon will then identify and verify the appropriate spinal level with intraoperative Xrays. The spinal implants are then carefully placed and verified with X-rays. A correction maneuver is then performed, effectively locking the spine into a new orientation. Bone from the pelvis is then placed in the operative zone to aid in obtaining a solid fusion. The deep tissues are sutured back into anatomic alignment. The skin is closed with a plastic surgical closure. After your surgery, you will need to stay in the hospital for four to five days. Bracing may be necessary for a short period after the surgery. You should be able to walk the day after the procedure. |
