Osteoporotic Spinal FracturesOsteoporosis may lead to spinal compression fractures. Many of these fractures are noted to be non-painful. Occasionally, a pain syndrome characterized by loss of mobility, increased dependence for daily activities, and chronic narcotic usage may be due to this type of fracture. A rounded (or kyphotic) posture can also be seen with loss of height. Many symptomatic fractures have been noted to "heal" over a several month period. This healing process may be associated with a continued loss of height and increased deformity. For osteoporotic spinal fractures with intractable pain and/or deformity, a procedure such as vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty may be recommended. In cases of neurologic compromise, more extensive surgical procedures may need to be recommended. |
