DiscographyThis procedure is designed to help the surgeons identify painful regions of the spine from disorders of the intervertebral disc. The procedure involves an injection of X-ray contrast into the disc. This is performed to determine the morphology of the disc, as well as to correlate the discomfort of injection with the typical back pain experienced of the particular patient. The injection is often followed by a CAT scan to better visualize the injection pattern within the disc. Discography is a highly subjective procedure. For an unbiased test, the doctors prefer to not perform the study on their own. Instead, patients are referred to a facility where this procedure is routinely performed without the potential bias of a surgeon. |
