Common Causes of Back Pain

If you are experiencing back pain, it may be he result of one of these conditions. No matter what condition may be affecting your back, you should seek the advice of a qualified spine doctor if back pain lasts longer than 3 days.

Spine Condition:
Description
Herniated Cervical Disc • A disc in the neck region that bulges out of place causing pain
• Can be gradual or sudden
• Symptoms include a dull or sharp pain in the arms or shoulders, weakness or tingling
Herniated Thoracic Disc • A bulging or ruptured disc in the upper back area
• Can be gradual or sudden
• Symptoms include a dull or sharp pain in the arms or shoulders, weakness or tingling
Herniated Lumbar Disc • A disc in the lower back that bulges out of place causing pain
• Can be gradual or sudden
• Symptoms include a dull or sharp pain in the legs, weakness or tingling, sciatica
General Disc Degeneration • Can be the result of age-related wear and tear or disease
• Can still occur in younger people
Spinal Fracture • Requires immediate attention
• Can be sports related or the result of osteoporosis
Kyphosis • Also known as slouching or “hunchbackism”
• Can be the result of poor posture or a structural abnormality
Spinal Tumors (Non-Malignant) • Rare, but painful condition
• Symptoms include sciatica, numbness, sight paralysis, spinal deformity and fever
• Symptoms often worse at night and not associated with physical activity
Spinal Malignancy • Dangerous if they lead to spinal canal compression
• Symptoms include sciatica, numbness, sight paralysis, spinal deformity and fever
• Symptoms often worse at night and not associated with physical activity
Spinal Stenosis • Characterized by a narrowing of the spinal canal
• Associated with aging, typically seen in patients over 50
Spondylolisthesis • A forward slip of a spine disc
• Some people are predisposed
• Risk increases with physical activity
Scoliosis • Curvature of the spine greater than 10 degrees
• Most often caused by spinal deformities, but can also result from injury
