Acute Neck Pain

Most instances of cervical pain may be attributable to a muscle strain due to abnormal lifting or motion.  Stressful situations may also be involved.

The most effective home remedy for acute cervical pain is to try over the counter anti-inflammatory medicine, such as ibuprofen or naprosyn.  Using ice or warm compresses may help alleviate some of the muscle spasms.  Acetominophen (Tylenol) can also be used to help minimize the pain.

If the acute neck pain is associated with arm pain, the above still applies.  Warning signs include arm weakness, increasing pain, and/or changes in bowel or bladder function.  These changes are very important to notify the doctor.  If you can not contact the doctor, you should be evaluated in an emergency room.
