Acute Low Back Pain

Most instances of low back pain may be attributable to a muscle strain due to abnormal lifting or motion.

The most effective home remedy for acute low back pain is to try over the counter anti-inflammatory medicine, such as ibuprofen or naprosyn, while allowing a period of up to 24 hours for bed rest.  Using ice or warm compresses may help alleviate some of the muscle spasms.  Acetominophen (Tylenol) can also be used to help minimize the pain.

If the back pain is associated with leg pain, the above still applies.  Warning signs include leg weakness, increasing pain, and/or changes in bowel or bladder function.  These changes are very important to notify the doctor.  If you can not contact the doctor, you should be evaluated in an emergency room.
