Spine Care

Treatment options are tailored to the individual patient.

The emphasis at the South Florida Spine Institute is to deliver the highest quality of spine care in the community.

North American Spine Society Back to Health Month April 2002

Non-Operative Care:

The majority of patients respond to a short course of anti-inflammatory medication, as well as a period of physical therapy.  The therapy includes exercises, therapeutic modalities, home-based exercise, and education on preventing future occurrences of pain.  Certain patients may be a candidates for support bracing.

Occasionally patients with more severe symptoms (or poor response to therapy) are referred for diagnostic and/or therapeutic injections.  Imaging studies such as CAT scans and MRI scans may also be required in order for the doctor to fully evaluate a patient's symptoms.

When a patient fails all forms of conservative (non-operative) treatment, surgical intervention may be recommended.  The decision to undergo spine surgery is not taken lightly.  The doctor will fully explain the risks/benefits of the recommended procedure in order for the patient to arrive at an educated decision.

There are circumstances when surgery is not a viable treatment option for a patient.  The doctor will recommend different options in those situations.

Surgical Care:

The type of surgery that is performed is based on the physical findings at examination, the response to therapy, length of symptoms, results of imaging studies, and response to diagnostic testing.

Occasionally, a patient with a previous surgical intervention presents with new or recurrent symptoms.  This type of patient may undergo specific testing to determine what may be the most appropriate therapeutic intervention may be required.
